Unfortunately, that’s not always the case -sometimes the hair gets mats, and they’re so hard to get rid of.
Detangling a Yorkie’s hair is a nightmare for both the pup and the person doing it. One way to ensure the detangling process is easy is by using a detangler spray.
And in this blog post, I’ll be getting into details about the best detangler spray for Yorkies.
What Kind of Detangler Can I Use on My Yorkie?
Here are my top detangler sprays for Yorkies. I’ll share my favorite features, pros, and cons of each of the sprays. And then, I’ll teach you how to choose a detangler for your Yorkie at the end of this review.
Let’s dive in.
1. BioSilk for Dogs Silk Therapy Detangling – Editor’s Choice
I didn’t know that Biosilk had a dog line, but I’ve been using their products for my hair and my granddaughter’s hair for years. Honestly, I wasn’t sure they could make it in the dog hair industry, but they surprised me.
For starters, the scent of this detangler spray is amazing. I’ve heard pet parents who aren’t fans of strong fragrances complain about it being too much. However, the scent doesn’t seem overpowering to me at all.
Biosilk dog detangler doesn’t have any parabens, and its pH is balanced, so it’s safe for your Yorkie. It’s made of natural ingredients that reduce your dog’s stress by pulling by softening the mats.
Benefits
- It leaves your Yorkie’s hair shiny.
- It’s paraben and sulfate-free.
- It has a sweet fragrance.
- It’s very effective even with bad mats.
- You can use it on wet or dry hair.
Drawbacks
- Some pet parents don’t like the strong scent. To me, it’s a light pleasant scent.
I made a video of me using it on my Yorkie Bear:
2. TropiClean Sweet Pea Tangle Remover Spray for Pets
If you’re looking for a sweet scent that’s not overwhelming, then you’ll love the TropiClean Sweet Pea Tangle Remover Spray for Pets. It has a sweet pea smell, and even pet parents who are super sensitive to scents mentioned that they could handle it.
If your Yorkie needs constant detangling, I recommend using the TropiClean dog detangler spray. The spray not only removes the tangles but also leaves your Yorkie’s hair soft and shiny as it aids in moisture retention. It is very convenient because it doesn’t require any rinsing, simply apply and massage on wet hair and comb out the mats.
That being said, if you’re looking for a spray for stubborn mats, check out our other options.
Benefits
- It has a mild sweet scent.
- It aids in moisture retention leaving your Yorkie’s hair shiny.
- 97% of the ingredients used are natural, and the rest are sourced from naturally occurring plant.
Drawbacks
- It’s not very effective for Yorkie mats that have stayed on for a long time.
3. True Blue Easy Comb Detangling Spray
I love many things about the True-Blue Easy Comb Detangling Spray, but one of my favorites is that it has a tearless formula. Now, this might not seem like a big deal, but I have a dramatic Yorkie, and we had an incident.
Another great feature of the spray is the powerful ingredient list. The spray is made of natural botanical ingredients that include organic olive and organic lavender. This means it’s safe to use even if your Yorkie is very sensitive.
Other ingredients worth mentioning include lemongrass, chamomile, macadamia oil, and panthenol. I know panthenol has a bad rep among holistic pet parents, but it really comes in handy when removing stubborn mats.

One of the main ingredients of the Miracle detangling spray is aloe vera. The latter helps in soothing and healing your dog’s itchy hot spots. This is crucial as many mats result from too much scratching. Another ingredient worth mentioning is honey, as it contributes to regrowing any hair your pup may have lost due to matting.

5. Warren London Dog Dematting and Detangler Spray
CHECK PRICE AND AVAILABILITY
The Warren London Dog Dematting spray works wonders for Yorkies as it’s formulated for pups who have non-shedding fur like Yorkies. It was also formulated by groomers, so it checks all the requirements of a detangler spray.
This spray doesn’t work on the surface of your Yorkie’s tangles; it penetrates deeper to detangle those deep stubborn mats. This is possible because it contains aloe vera, vanilla bean, and mineral oil. It’s also free from alcohol, parabens, and other harsh chemicals.
I love the subtle vanilla scent of the spray because it’s not overwhelming like some detangling sprays. It gives your Yorkie a fresh scent and neutralizes any odor without upsetting you.
My only advice when using this spray is to put it in your hands and then rub it on your Yorkie. It has a thick consistency, and it’s more of a lotion than a spray – thankfully, it’s not sticky or greasy, which is good for you and your Yorkie.
Benefits
- It has an amazing consistency.
- It’s great for removing deep and stubborn mats.
- It has a sweet fragrance.
Drawbacks
- It leaves some residue, so you may consider using it when bathing your Yorkie.
6.Cowboy Magic Detangler & Shine
The Cowboy Magic Detangler & Shine is kind of a household detangler. It works miracles on horses, cats, dogs, and even human hair. One user says they’ve been using it to detangle their hair, and their hairdresser encouraged them to keep using it as it strengthens her hair.
But will it detangle your Yorkie’s hair? Absolutely. The detangler removes all mats and leaves your puppy’s hair moisturized. In addition, the spray protects them further as it repels sand, dust, and dirt.
Another great feature is that it can be used on dry hair, so you don’t have to give your Yorkie a full bath to detangle their hair. You also need just a small amount to remove the tangles, which is very economical.
Benefits
- It can be used on dry hair.
- It repels dust and dirt.
- It’s alcohol-free.
- It can be used for other animals and humans!
Drawbacks
- The strong floral scent can be overpowering.
7.BarkLogic – Leave-in Spray Conditioner – Detangler Spray
The Barklogic leave-in spray if you’re looking for a detangler that doesn’t require you to give your Yorkie a full bath. You can spray on wet or dry fur and brush the mats for detangling.
One of the greatest features of this spray is that it’s infused with aromatherapy lavender to calm down your pup. Removing mats is a process, and it can stress your pup – the scent helps them relax by easing their muscle and relieving anxiety.
The spray is not made from harmful and harsh chemicals such as parabens, sulfates, or artificial colors. Instead, it’s formulated using calendula, chamomile flower, and yarrow extracts, which help detangle, condition, and leave your Yorkie’s hair fresh.
Benefits
- It’s vegan and cruelty-free.
- It’s hypoallergenic.
- It’s infused with lavender oil, which helps your pup relieve stress.
- It can be used on wet and dry hair.
Drawbacks
- It’s a bit too watery.
8. Pet Head Fur Ball Detangling Spray
This spray is designed for dogs with long and curly hair, so even if your Yorkie is a crossbreed, it will work very well on them.
The spray has a sweet strawberry scent, soothing to you and your Yorkie. And it gets rid of all that nasty dog smell. Besides the fragrance, the spray is made with natural ingredients that detangle and enhance your Yorkie’s hair. The ingredients include fatty acids, wheat protein, vitamin E, and sunflower seed oil. Thanks to all these goodies, the spray leaves your Yorkie’s hair shiny.
This spray is eco-friendly and safe, so you don’t need to worry if your dog licks it after you spray them. The only caveat is that the bottle doesn’t allow you to have a good grip, which can make spraying skittish Yorkies jumpy.
Benefits
- It has a good pH.
- It’s safe and eco-friendly.
- It leaves your puppy’s hair shiny and moisturized.
- It has a sweet, light scent.
Drawbacks
- The bottle design doesn’t allow you a tight grip.
Best Detangler Spray for Yorkie’s Guide
Now that I’ve shared my best detanglers with you, it’s time for some learning. As I promised, here are some factors to consider when buying your Yorkie, a detangler spray.
Ingredients
All Yorkies are different, and some are more sensitive than others. If your Yorkies get allergies easily or they’re generally sensitive, it’s best to shop for detanglers with natural ingredients.
Some ingredients to look for include argan, coconut, jojoba, silk, and aloe vera. These ingredients not only help with detangling, but they leave your Yorkie’s hair nourished, moisturized, and shiny.
Try to avoid detanglers with ingredients like parabens, formaldehyde, phthalates, or harsh chemicals.
Fragrance
This all comes down to preference – some pets and pet parents love scentless sprays, while others want one with a strong and lasting scent.
Your dog surely doesn’t need to smell like a bed of roses, but a mild spray to neutralize the dog smell helps.
Consistency
This refers to the texture or form of the spray. Sprays can either be runny (watery) or thick. If you want something you can just spray, a runny spray will work for you, but if you want something to use when bathing your Yorkie, then it’s best to use a thick detangler. It’s easier to rub and massage a thick detangler in your pup’s hair.
Results
This refers to how the spray leaves your Yorkies hair looking. Some detanglers will leave it clean and shiny, while others won’t impact their appearance.
On the other side, some sprays will leave your Yorkie’s hair greasy and sticky, which is very annoying. Also, if you’re not bathing your Yorkie, the greasy detangler will only cause more tangling.
While this is hard to know before using the spray, you can read other users’ reviews to find out.
Design of the bottle
Now, this may sound a little petty until you want to spray a jumpy puppy. Always buy detanglers that you can grip firmly. It’s a small tip, but it will impact your experience significantly.
Budget
How much are you willing to spend on your Yorkie’s detangler spray? While you don’t want to compromise the quality of the detangler, you also don’t have to break your bank. You can find an affordable and effective spray.
One more Tip from an experience Yorkie mom, breeder and pet groomer
I have 4 dogs and we make a ritual every day of getting brushed. I use a hair brush that feels like a massage when used on them and they love it.
If you brush your dog’s hair every day, you won’t have to worry too much about mats as you will be able to get them before they get too bad.
At first 2 of my 4 dogs didn’t want to be brushed but it didn’t take long for them to learn to enjoy it and now they get excited when I say “It’s brush time”. It’s a treat for them, only takes a minute or two for each dog, and is a bonding experience for us.
Final Thoughts
One common problem Yorkie’s parents share is dealing with tangling hair. It’s painful to watch, and dealing with it isn’t a walk in the park, so you need all the help you can get.
A detangling spray doesn’t do magic, but it sure makes the process X100 better. That being said, be careful when shopping for one; you don’t want to remove mats and then start ending up with itchiness. Find something that’s safe, eco-friendly, and hypoallergenic for your Yorkie.
I hope my best Yorkie detangler spray gives you a few options, and if not, you can use a guide; you can shop for one.
Which detangler do you think you’ll buy for your Yorkie? And if you try or have tried any of these detanglers, leave a comment and let me know what you thought of it.
